Workshop on Direct Taxes, 20th February 2009, Chamber premises

Mr. Pallav Gupta, Chairperson, Direct Taxes Sub-Committee of the Chamber was the programme coordinator. Shri T.K Chatterjee, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-I, Kolkata was the Chief Guest. Shri Chatterjee commented on the growth in Income Tax collection in West Bengal. The State boasts a 24% growth rate. He also spoke about the historical association between the Bengal Chamber and legislators in India and that the Chamber played a leading role during the formulation of the Income Tax Act.

Mr. Rahul Mitra, Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers (P) Ltd., made a

presentation on Scopes of WHT on Cross Border Remittance, taxation of Non Residents

and some specific topics in the context of WHT like connectivity through bandwidth in leased lines, payments made for distribution of software, cross country charge of expatriates’ salaries, transfer of I.P. registered outside India but used in India, etc.

The other speakers were Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharya, Chartered Accountant, Sukumar Bhattacharya & Co, Mr. Barun Ghosh, Chartered Accountant, Ray & Ray and Ms. Koel Mukherjee, Manager –Taxation, ITC Limited. Mr. Bhattacharya addressed TDS on domestic payments and its current issues. Mr. Barun Kumar Ghosh spoke on Fringe Benefit Tax – its legal aspects and current issues. Corporate implications of Fringe Benefit Tax were covered by Ms. Koel Mukherjee.

The programme was attended by over 80 participants.
