The BCC&I Leadership Institute (BLI) organized a special one-day workshop titled 'Engineering Leadership' on 5th June 2026 at the JIS Room, The Bengal Chamber Premises, Kolkata. The programme brought together industry leaders and experts to explore the evolving role of engineering professionals in driving business growth, innovation, digital transformation and sustainable development. The workshop was designed to equip participants with practical insights into leadership, technological advancements and strategic decision-making in modern engineering and manufacturing environments.

The workshop commenced with an opening remarks and context-setting session by Mr. Supriyo Sinha, Chairperson, BCC&I Leadership Institute and Director - Business Transformation & Corporate Strategy, The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Limited who joined virtually. He spoke on the journey from engineer to business leader, emphasizing the importance of combining technical expertise with strategic thinking, people management and business acumen. He highlighted how a strong foundation in engineering and technology can enable professionals to transition into leadership roles and contribute effectively to organizational growth and transformation.

The first technical session was delivered by Mr. S.K. Das, Executive Director and Refinery Head, Haldia Refinery, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, on 'Engineering Leadership for Business Performance - Value Creation: Revenue, Cost and Innovation'. He discussed the critical role of leadership in enhancing business performance through effective management of scale, complexity and cross-functional teams. He highlighted the importance of empathy for building resilient and future-ready engineering teams capable of adapting to changing market conditions while driving operational efficiency, innovation and sustainable value creation.

The second session focused on 'Leveraging AI in Engineering/Manufacturing Leadership - Practical Applications and Integration of AI in Engineering' and was jointly led by Mr. Partha Sengupta, Co-Chairperson, IT Committee, BCC&I and Senior Vice President (I3L) & Head of IT Shared Services, ITC Limited and Mr. Partha Protim Mondal, Chief Information Officer, Berger Paints India Ltd. The speakers explored the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on engineering and manufacturing operations, highlighting practical applications of AI in improving productivity, optimizing processes and enhancing decision-making. They also discussed the importance of digital transformation and the need for leaders to adapt to emerging technologies to drive efficiency, innovation and predictive capabilities across organizations.

The third session was conducted by Mr. Manish Ranjan, Special Invitee Member, Energy, Environment and Water National Committee, BCC&I and ESG and Sustainability Practice Lead - India Geo, Hewlett Packard Enterprise India Pvt. Ltd., on 'ESG in Engineering and Manufacturing'. He spoke about the growing significance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in shaping business strategies and operational practices. The session highlighted how organizations can integrate sustainability considerations into engineering and manufacturing processes while creating long-term value for stakeholders and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The final session on 'Execution Excellence - Design Thinking and Innovative Solutions in Production Process' was delivered by Mr. Sudip Haldar, Chief Technical Officer, Jupiter Wagons Limited. He discussed the role of design thinking in driving innovation and improving production processes. The session also focused on risk management strategies, operational excellence and the importance of fostering a culture of continuous improvement to enhance competitiveness and business performance.

The workshop provided participants with valuable perspectives on engineering leadership, technological innovation, sustainability and execution excellence. Through insightful presentations and interactive discussions, the programme reinforced the importance of adaptive leadership, digital transformation and responsible business practices in navigating the evolving industrial landscape. The workshop was attended by 15 participants representing industries like energy, railways, oil and gas, chemicals, logistics and EPC.
